If you've spent hours staring at your wardrobe wondering what to wear - then you are not alone.
According to statistics we only wear 20% of what's in our wardrobe and yet we still keep buying, we still keep hoarding and we still keep adding to our collection of unworn items until our wardrobe is ready to burst. Everyday millions of women around the world are confronted with the niggling voice in their head that they have 'nothing to wear'.
First impressions are made within 15 seconds and people judge us based on how we look and present ourselves. Our clothes and overall image can often let us down and we may not realise that we need assistance and so we keep repeating the same fashion faux pas over and over again.
Every once in a while, one must got through a wardrobe overhaul, a detox, an audit or an edit - whatever you wish to call it, it must be done honestly and with a discerning eye. How can one move forward and make positive changes when our clothes and style are holding us back from our past?
Letting go of clothes that no longer reflect who you are today can be an emotional experience as you are letting go of items that once fitted, a sentimental item given as a gift or even bought during a milestone event - like the year you lost 10kg. Let's face it, your body may have changed and your lifestyle is no longer what it was like 5 years ago. You must dress for your current lifestyle and don't shy away from showing your personality through your clothes and accessories.
If you are ready to make some personal improvements, there is no better place to start than in your very own wardrobe. Here are some tips to make sure that you always put your best foot forward:
• Try on everything you have and have piles for the Yes', Nos and Maybes. Be very honest and remove the emotional connection with the items.
• If you are lucky enough to have a big wardrobe space, have your summer and winter wardrobe sorted.
• For every 5 pieces of clothing you throw away, allow yourself to buy a 'wow' item.
• Do things in small increments - get used to the feeling of letting go. A wardrobe review can be time consuming and emotionally draining, (if you don't believe me - try it today!)
• Rotate and colour code your clothes so getting dressed is much easier in the mornings.
• Categorise your clothes from pants, skirts, dresses, shirts and so on. Go from light to dark colours.
• Throw away underwear that have stretched, shrunk or lost its colour - this also applies to your clothes. A good foundation is a must.
• Use wooden coat hangers only - they will keep the shape of your clothing for years.
• Fold woollens and have your most used item where you can see them.
• Display your jewellery so getting dressed can be fun in the mornings and weekends.
• Only keep items that fit you and what you love so you will always look the part.
• Think about your lifestyle and where you spend your time the most. If you work full time - then you must invest in classic work pieces.
• Take cue from your favourite celebrity and cut out images and display it in a folder for some inspiration.
